China Travel MW
China International Travel Midwest is a travel agency based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, specializing in tours to and from China and the United States. As their prescence in the market was growing, CIT-MW contacted me for a refresh their website. They wanted the website to be modern, coherent, and functional.
Visuals
Traditional Chinese laquer screens are decorated with large, etched, and painted landscapes, featuring gold and red accents against a black background. These screens were the inspiration behind the look and color pallete of the website.
The bold colors, large banners, and oversized characters used in this project are reminiscent of the look of traditional Chinese furniture, yet modern and legible. It is perhaps a testament to the timelessness of traditional Chinese art, as well as being a metaphor for the China of today - a country in which the ancient and the modern co-exist.
Function
Animations and no-refresh tabs make the user experience enjoyable and fast. Photographs have been compressed to reduce loading time and server costs, yet text images are free of compression artifacts. And e-mail message titles correspond to the name of the respective tour.
The largest page loads in about 1.7s using a Webkit-based browser on a basic DSL wireless connection. Documents, scripts, and stylesheets load in about 540ms. Typical pages load in about 600ms, with documents, scripts, and stylesheets taking around 450ms to load.
