DTLOK
DTLOK (Does This Look Okay?) is an interactive social website that allows users to upload photos of their own fashions and to rate and comment on fashions uploaded by other users.
Visuals
For the design of the website, I wanted to make it immediately obvious that it was a fashion-oriented website while at the same time keeping the design unisex and universal. Large serif fonts and a warm, faded color pallete forms a style that is reminiscent of modern fashion brands without being overtly feminine or masculine.
Function
Ergonomics were important in this design, as the user should be able to flip through numerous images with minimal scrolling and button-hunting. For this reason, it was paramount to fit a large volume of information on a single page. Negative space was employed to help keep the vertical height in check while avoiding a cramped look. Text sizing was tuned to emphasize essential information and to make the typography look great on all modern browsers and operating systems. Moreover, large, contrasty buttons and UI elements make the site intuitive and fast to use.
It is difficult to specify the loading performance of the website, as it depends largely on the image displayed. However, as always, fast loading performance has been emphasized, using tiling and compression techniques to reduce the overall page size.
Logo Design
The goals for the logo design were largely analogous to those of the website design - unisex, modern, and immediately recognizable as being fashion-oriented.
The first concept emphasized the branding slogan "Fashion by Democracy." The logo featured a "democracy" that forms a "D" for "DTLOK" and "democracy."
The next revision was inspired by the classic fairy tale, "Snow White". A magic mirror in the story was used by the queen to determine "who was the fairest of them all." The DTLOK website is analogous to such a talking mirror, although it is the users who decide how others' fashions stack up. This design thus featured a "democracy" behind the mirror.
The final revision made use of the mirror concept, but substituted realistic silouettes for the simplified figures.
Slogan Design
The slogan "Fashion by Democracy" was also requested to be drawn in a logo format by the client. I tried a few designs for this graphic, including a "sticker" design and a "rubber stamp" design.
